- 172 university and graduate student teams nationwide compete… “No Way Out” team wins Grand Prize from the Commissioner of the Korea Customs Service and KRW 3 million

- Team proposes a preliminary screening model to identify suspected cases of anti-dumping duty circumvention

Incheon National University (INU), led by President Injae Lee, announced that the undergraduate “No Way Out” team, advised by Professor Kim Kyung-won of the Department of Global Trade & Service, won first place in the final round of the 1st Trade Statistics Utilization and Analysis Competition, held at Seoul Main Customs on September 4. The team received the Grand Prize from the Commissioner of the Korea Customs Service and KRW 3 million in prize money.

The competition, jointly organized by the Korea Customs Service and the Korea Trade Statistics Promotion Institute, was launched this year to raise awareness among university and graduate students of the importance of national trade statistics and to discover innovative ideas for their practical application. A total of 172 teams from universities nationwide participated, with 10 teams advancing to the final round.

The INU No Way Out team analyzed trade statistics under the theme, “Observation-Level Preliminary Screening of Suspected Anti-Dumping Duty Circumvention Cases Based on Trade Flow Indicators,” and proposed an analytical model and policy applications for identifying potential cases of anti-dumping duty circumvention in advance. The model is designed to detect anomalies in trade flows using data, screen suspicious cases at the individual observation level, and enable the results to be utilized in customs administration.

Students from the Department of Global Trade & Service and the Department of Business Administration collaborated on the research, combining expertise in international trade with data analytics methodologies. Working through “DIVE,” a research group led by Professor Kim, students including Kim Chae-bin and Cho Eun-ji continuously exchanged feedback with their faculty advisor throughout the process—from data collection and refinement to improving the analytical model, preparing presentation materials for the final round, and practicing their presentation and responses to questions—thereby enhancing the overall quality of the research.

Professor Kim said, “It is especially meaningful that our students won first place in the inaugural competition, which brought together university and graduate students from across the country.” He added, “The achievement is significant because students from different academic disciplines collaborated to analyze real-world trade and customs issues using data and proposed practical policy applications.”

He continued, “We will continue to provide guidance and support so that students can go beyond theory, use public and industrial data to solve real-world problems, and grow into globally competitive interdisciplinary AX professionals.”
